Developing Mental Health First Aid skills in our people is part of the work we’re doing to embed a sustainable and effective mental health program at OBE Organic.

OBE Organic’s Mission: ‘Help people lead better, healthier lives’

Supplying organic grass fed beef to the world helps consumers live better, healthier lives, but we’re working to bring our mission to life in all aspects of our business.

Challenging the stigma of mental health and taking real steps to improve mental health is one way we’re doing that.

We have completed the internationally recognised Mental Health First Aid Course, and developed a Mental Health Action Plan, and formed a Mental Health Committee to be better equipped to support individuals and reduce risk for mental health conditions in our workplace.

Sales and Production Executive Elle Rands and Administration Manager Kim Stalley gained Mental Health First Aid accreditation via a 2-day intensive training course. Most other team members have completed a 4 hour Mental Health First Aid course, offered by Workplace Health and Safety Electrical Safety Office Workers’ Compensation Regulator. The courses have educated our team members on mental health conditions and signs, available services and support.

The Mental Health First Aid Course helps participants to assist those who are developing a mental health problem or experiencing a worsening of an existing mental health problem until appropriate professional help is received.

As well as being in harmony with our mission, our Mental Health Action Plan is also in line with our FLOURISH sustainability program, which includes improving the lives of people in our supply chain.

Better mental health is better business

Each year, one in five of Australians will take time off work because they feel stressed, anxious, depressed or mentally unhealthy.

This figure is more than twice as high (46 per cent) if someone considers you’re their workplace to be mentally unhealthy.

A healthy workplace can improve staff morale and engagement, reduce staff turnover and improve interpersonal relationships among employees, resulting in fewer conflicts and complaints.

The evidence is clear that workplaces are a setting for creating transformational change; ensuring the employee safety and providing much-needed supports to those with a mental health condition.

The benefits of investing in workplace mental health are felt, not just by those individuals, but by their employers and the economy as a whole. The Mental Health First Aid Course advises participants to assist those who are developing a mental health problem or experiencing a worsening of an existing mental health problem until appropriate professional help is received.
