About the Collaboration

OBE Organic began in the nineties as the first and only premium meat exporter that was 100% dedicated to the production of organic beef in Australia. Formed by a group of far-sighted pastoral families, we had a vision to support farmers who operate in the pure heart of Australia, while supplying the world’s best organic beef to restaurants & retailers around the world. We have matured into a business to help people lead better, healthier lives. We are on a journey of collaboration, inside and outside our value chain.

Our family farmers are united by a shared respect for the environment and their animals and a commitment to produce the best possible organic beef. It was this collective desire to do better that led us to establish OBE® Organic in the early 1990s.

Emma Pendergast and her husband Brodie manage a USDA Certified Organic beef cattle property called ‘Gilling’ just outside of Goondiwindi in Queensland. This collaboration captures moments while Brodie is at work at Gilling, with a little help from their children, Clancy and Ruby.

About Emma Pendergast

Emma is a rural Mum of two gorgeous children, a wife to Brodie and a passionate photographer.

You will often find her pottering in her garden whilst assisting with the day to day tasks of running the station.

She was born into a horse family and it’s safe to say the passion for horses is in her blood. Emma and Brodie own a collection of beautiful horses that they compete on at campdrafts.

Emma has always had a love for photography and after a push from her husband to get a camera I was fortunate enough to spend a weekend with well known equine photographer and dear friend, Stephen Mowbray.

Her photography business has evolved rapidly over the past couple of years.

She has photographed some of Australia’s largest performance horse sales and prestigious campdraft events and more recently emerged into family portraiture, engagement & newborn photoshoots with the occasional wedding thrown in the mix.

Working In The Cattle Yards

Well-designed cattle yards are central to good management, providing safe and efficient spaces to draft, sort, and load livestock. At Gilling, they are a vital part of daily operations.

Showing Dad How Its Done

Young Clancy proudly demonstrates his growing skills in the cattle yards, keen to show Dad everything he has learned.

Cleaning A Water Trough

Fresh water is vital for cattle health, with adult animals requiring 30–90 litres each day. Keeping troughs clean ensures reliable hydration for growth, reproduction, and wellbeing.

Clancy At Work

Emma’s son Clancy is already learning the rhythms of station life, lending a hand alongside his parents in day-to-day work at Gilling.

The Person In Charge At Gilling

Animal welfare at Gilling is overseen by the person in charge, whose responsibility shifts throughout the process, from the producer before loading, to the driver during transport, and finally to the receiver at the destination.

A striking sunset over Gilling marks the close of another day on the organic cattle station.

Inspecting the Mob

Brodie Pendergast and his offsider quietly observe cattle moving through the yards, ensuring livestock are handled calmly to reduce stress and maintain welfare.

Herefords are a hardy, muscular beef breed well suited to a range of climates. Their resilience makes them ideal for withstanding the extremes of the Australian summer.

Working Dogs are Keen to Work

Bindy, Boots, and other working dogs are essential to station life, valued for their focus, intelligence, and adaptability. Their speed and trainability make them indispensable partners in cattle work.

Grazing at Gilling

Organic Herefords moved from Western Queensland graze and fatten on grass at Gilling before processing at a nearby facility. Their grassfed organic beef is sold both within Australia and to international markets such as the USA and Asia.
