Conducting an emergency aeromedical retrieval in the outback, in the middle of the night, comes with its challenges. While our pilots are trained to land in a range of circumstances, we often rely on the help of the community to keep outback airstrips well maintained and lit for landings.

RFDS Deputy Head of Flying Operations and Pilot Nick Tully came up with a bright idea – an RFDS Lantern Kit for Queenslanders. He created a safe and easy-to-maintain diesel lantern which can be seen from the air up to 48km away. Last year, RFDS delivered lanterns to more than 60 outback stations across Queensland.
