Afghan cameleers

In the 1860’s the first Afghan cameleers arrived in Maree. Their camel teams were the perfect solution to move goods through the central Australian deserts.

Prior to the advent of trucks, these camel teams moved supplies up the Birdsville Track from Maree to Birdsville.

The Birdsville Track is still legendary.

It’s still a dirt road, with a rich history as an Aboriginal trading route leading from waterhole to waterhole, a path for explorers and an old stock route where drovers moved cattle from fattening country in the north to markets in the south.
