As I reflect on my first day as an intern at OBE Organic, I’m filled with an overwhelming sense of gratitude—not just for the opportunity that lies ahead, but for the unwavering support of my family who have been my rock every step of the way. Hi, I’m Sari Akkad, and this is the story of how my journey as an intern at OBE Organic is as much theirs as it is mine.

My path to this moment has been shaped by the love and encouragement of my parents and two older brothers. Born and raised in Syria, our family’s journey to Australia in early 2018 was not without its challenges. Fleeing our homeland as refugees, we embarked on a journey filled with uncertainty, but fueled by hope for a better future.

Throughout it all, my parents and brothers stood by me, offering unwavering support and guidance. From helping me navigate the complexities of a new language and culture to encouraging me to pursue my dreams, their belief in me never wavered. It’s thanks to their sacrifices and determination that I stand here today, ready to embark on a new chapter as an intern at OBE Organic.

My parents instilled in me a strong work ethic and a passion for education from a young age. Despite the upheaval of our circumstances, they made sure that my education remained a priority. And when the opportunity arose for me to pursue my dreams of studying technology at Queensland University of Technology, they encouraged me to seize it with both hands. I graduated QUT with Bachelor of Information Technology in early 2024.

Likewise, my brothers have been a constant source of inspiration and support. As the eldest siblings, they paved the way for me, setting an example of resilience and perseverance in the face of adversity. Their encouragement and guidance have been instrumental in shaping my journey, and I am forever grateful for their unwavering belief in me.

As I embarked on my internship journey, their support has never wavered. From helping me prepare for interviews to offering words of encouragement on my first day at OBE Organic, their presence loomed large, a reminder of the strength and resilience of family bonds.

Throughout my first day at OBE Organic, I couldn’t help but carry their support with me. As I settled into my role, I couldn’t shake the feeling that this journey was as much theirs as it was mine.

As I look ahead to the weeks and months to come, I know that their support will continue to be my guiding light. Whatever challenges may arise, I take comfort in the knowledge that I have my family by my side, cheering me on every step of the way.

The International Internship Program through Brisbane City Council is part of the Council’s commitment to Brisbane’s economy by creating and expanding opportunities for Brisbane’s businesses and talented students. Participating students like myself, have an opportunity to gain four weeks of degree related, paid work experience with local businesses to explore new opportunities.

The application process was rigorous, but I persevered. After submitting my application, I was invited to participate in interviews with prospective host businesses. It was during one of these interviews that I first learned about OBE Organic—a leading producer of premium organic beef. I was interviewed by Dalene Wray, the Managing Director of OBE Organic. She was interested in my language skills, since Arabic is my first language. OBE Organic export to countries all over the world, including many with Arabic as the native language. The prospect of working with a company at the forefront of sustainable agriculture intrigued me, and I knew instantly that this was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up.

As I settle into my new role, I’m struck by the warm welcome extended to me by my colleagues. From the moment I walked through the door, I’ve been met with kindness, encouragement, and a genuine eagerness to help me succeed. It’s a testament to the inclusive and supportive culture that OBE Organic fosters—a culture that values diversity and embraces newcomers like myself with open arms.

So here’s to family, to love, and to the unwavering support that has brought me to this moment. My first day as an intern at OBE Organic may be over, but the journey is far from finished. And with my family by my side, I know that anything is possible.
