The internet helps us learn more about Mr Afford, who was born in 1875 and died in Birdsville in 1959.

In the Townsville Daily Bulletin, Tue 7th March 1933 there is a column titled ‘Birdsville Notes’, which reads:

“ Mr. George Hooper, manager of Diamantina Lakes station, who has been on a holiday to South Australia, for the last two months, passed through here with his entourage, from Adelaide early last week. His automobile developed a slight breakdown on the Marree track, some thirty-eight miles out and one of his party had a long dry tramp to Birdsville for assistance. Messrs. Harry Afford and Jack Gaffney Jr, motored down and fixed up the car and Mr. Hooper was enabled to come on here and resume his journey next day.”
