Mithaka Elder, Uncle George Gorringe was born in Innamincka in 1947, and lived and worked in the Channel Country most of his life. In 1995 he along with pastoralists and the local community rallied against cotton growers preventing them from securing cotton farming on the Cooper Creek. At the age of 76 Uncle George continues his fight against the new threat of unconventional gas mining in the Lake Eyre Basin. However, he is now supported by the Mithaka Aboriginal Corporation, the Lake Eyre Basin Traditional Owner Alliance which comprises of about 19 Traditional Owner groups in the Lake Eyre Basin catchment, Western Rivers Alliance and a plethora of Grey Nomads who make their yearly passage through the Channel Country.
