CANBERRA sprinter Ken Telfer won the inaugural $5000 Birdsville 120m gift in a blanket finish at the New Turf Oval this afternoon.

ACT’s Ken Telfer has taken out the first ever Birdsville Gift sponsored by the OBE Beef & Birdsville Hotel.  Telfer off 12.75m and in a extreme win assisted 11.96sec pipped Kurwongbah’s Travis Venema (12m) in a near dead heat.  Telfer was later quoted at the Birdsville Hotel that he was absolutely “stoked to be the first winner of this special event.  It is a very unique to have a Birdsville Sash.”

Brothers rugby union player Greg Hamilton (16.75) has shown some early season form to finish third.  The suprise of the gift was Charleville’s Scott Owens off 14.75 showing great leg speed both on the track and the catwalk (later on that night) to edge out three time 2006 Stawell finalist Richard Norris (18m) for fourth.

Telfer’s success didn’t finish with the gift he also dominated the sprints by taking out both the Diamintina Shire Council 70m and Greene Eden Watering Systems 120m plate.

Kallangur’s Steve Minns (off 40m) in a time of 35.83 edged out Travis Venema (38m) for the Harris 300m open event.  Showing consistent form during the day this was Venema’s third 2nd placing which showed his great versatility over the day.

Minns off 230m also took out the Birdsville Caravan Park & Auto Mile Gift. In an absolute slog against a extreme wind NSW’s Lenny Duroux showed guts to take out second with Norris third and local runner and allrounder Max Rayment fourth. To view the full list of results go to the results tab @
